Task
Your goal is to be admitted to the United States after going through the examination and interview process at Ellis Island. You will become an immigrant who is trying to gain admittance to the United States. Each of you will draw a “character” card and read about your person. This is who you will pretend to be as you complete this activity. All of the information on this card will be necessary for you to know as you go through the examination process, so keep your card handy!
After touring Ellis Island, you will use the information on your character card to fill out the evaluation form. This form will be the way you will see if you were able to stay in the United States OR if you were detained (kept on Ellis Island for a longer period of time) until more information could be obtained about your background or health OR you were deported (sent back to your home country).
After the decision has been made, you are to write to family members back home describing your time on Ellis Island. You will also make a short video clip telling your own personal opinion on how this process would have made you feel if you actually would have been an immigrant coming to America in 1912.
Would YOU would have been able to enter the United States???
